Mr. Pen- Professional Compass for Woodworking, Compass with Wing

This is a must-have if you do any kind of woodworking or layout work. It’s one of those tools that seems simple but makes a big difference in accuracy and consistency. I never write reviews but for this I will make an exception. It is not at all what I expected. It is very heavy. The one on the right is 1.5oz, the Mr. Pen is 7.5oz. It's massive in comparison. You could stab the neighbor's mastiff with it. If you are looking for a compass made of German steel with precision you will be disappointed. This is not the one, however it is not without its charm. After the better part of an hour of sanding, filing and a few trips to the oscillating spindle sander it is smoother and the rough edges are knocked off. The head joint pin is rock solid....matter of fact it's a bit too tight. Little bit of oil and some back in forth and it's better. The wing nut threads are a bit sandy feeling but passable. It will probably smooth out over time. It appears to be made by hand in a machine shop. No stamped parts except maybe the wing, but it's well made if a bit crude. If I were to place this beside my 9 1/2 Stanley block plane(which I like better than my Veritas) you would have a hard time discerning that they were not built in the same era. There is no Made In China stamp on it. It takes a number two pencil and holds it fast and draws circles very well. The design is simple, solid and effective. It's what a good tool should be. And it's not too spendy. The only knock I have is the rough edges. I'd like to see a 2.0 version with a little more finesse.

This compass is amazingly robustly constructed of premium materials. It is WAY beyond the quality I was expecting. Heavy materials, precision construction, absolute mechanical reliability and design. Gorgeous instruments. I bought both sizes for use in carpentry and construction applications, and was just blown away by the quality of of their construction and actual beauty as instruments for this scale of use.

This 12-inch compass serves for making intermediate size circles and arcs in my shop as I have smaller compasses and a large trammel set for the really big stuff. This compass is solidly built and a good deal for the money. The pencil holder accepts standard pencils easily but will not take one of the oblong shaped carpenter's pencils. Not an issue with me. The compass was hard to open initially despite having a sheen of oil on it. I added a single drop of tri-flow lubricant to each side of the hinge and it worked much better (still a little stiff, which is good for holding position before tightening the main screw). If you haven't used a larger compass like this before it may seem awkward but I think it'll work fine for you once you're used to the heft of it. It opens to a 16-inch radius so you can make some pretty big arcs and circles. For radii below about 4-inches it will likely be less awkward to just use a smaller compass. Also nice for use as a divider. Note, though, that the "feet" in this compass are not all that sharp and would not be recommended for metal-working. Overall a nice addition to my shop.

Perfect for a workshop! Sturdy enough that they don't flex when drawing larger circles. No bells and whistles, just a product that works.

An okay tool. The mechanism is a bit stiff so adjusting the width takes 2 hands. That would be okay, but it doesn’t hold a wooden pencil very securely. So I occasionally have my circle not be completely round. I am going to try some tape around it to see if it will stabilize it

Was worried I wouldn't have a use for it and instantly did very precise not hard to use looks made strong heavy duty some of the photos show that it was kind of off mine was dead on would recommend eyeballing only gets you so far that little bit of extra with the tool like this makes the world of a difference in the final product.

This pro compass is the finest quality tool that I have in my collection, it will last me my life and the lives of any other people that have it after I'm dead, this item was a justifiable use of fuel, because it's well made and made without designed obsolescence, unlike the crap tools from the local hardware store, Jab saws, with plastic handles and little vice that break as soon as you use them, and every poorly thought out battery powered junk tool, this tool is fine crafted and a solid tool for the ages.

I got sick and tired of fooling with my ancient, grade school geometry tools and figured it was time to upgrade to better compass. This thing met all my expectations in spades. Has a good hefty feel with just the perfect amount of tension between the dividers. Of course, it’s equipped with a lock down screw, but doubt you’ll ever need it. Weighs about 7.7 ounces, like a small can of soup. Quality items may cost a bit more but always pays off eventually. Wished these had been in my tool chest years ago.
