The longer one is the anode and the shorter one is the cathode. Be careful not to reverse it. There is a fixed forward voltage drop inside the LED, so it cannot be directly connected to the circuit, because the power supply voltage may exceed this voltage drop and cause the LED to burn out. The forward voltage of red, yellow and green LEDs is 1.8V, and that of white LEDs is 2.6V.
