I am a 4th-6th grade teacher and bought Roominate for the classroom. I had a girls' day with the 2nd-6th grade girls & they loved it! First I read all the reviews, especially the negative ones, because I really wanted this to be a positive experience for my girls.Recommendations: I bought multiple kits so there were enough pieces; I showed them the roominatetoy.com website; the How To section has videos & The Roominate Library (also under this heading) gives pictures of ideas; also the Young Inventors section is all photos that have been sent in of kids' creations; You Tube also has great videos that walk you through how to make things. I also provided them with felt (for rugs), fleece material (blankets, table cloths, to sew pillows, etc), additional scrapbooking paper, pipe cleaners, etc to give them some ideas for extras. The first time when I introduced Roominate to the girls, I hung out & made myself available to help connect things, or sew pillows, or cut rugs, etc.so there wouldn't be any frustration.I would highly recommend the Village; it has, by far, the most pieces (including 2 light sets & 4 motors). I also purchased the Amusement Park, Townhouse, & Chateau. The Amusement Park had very low ratings but the 2nd most amount of pieces so I was just going to add the pieces in with the Village. Just out of curiosity I decided to build the large ferris wheel; wasn't very difficult; I changed the bottom of the 2 towers slightly because it was too narrow at the base; worked great; I will include pictures when I do the review for it. The Townhouse had some different pieces than the Village but a lot less pieces, no lights & 1 motor (which I knew when I ordered it; just trying to give pros & cons of each); I would buy the Amusement Park & possibly the Townhouse again if the price was right. The Chateau came with the EXACT same pieces as the VIllage, only a lot less; even the doll & pet were the same; I would not buy this again; I would much rather have several Villages for the amount of pieces. I hope this helps! I had lots of girls with different interests & a variety of ages so I think this is a good representation; they ALL loved it! So how can anyone put that down? It's almost like you don't want to write a bad review because writing a bad review is like attacking the concept it champions. But unfortunately, I don't feel it champions that cause enough.Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. Not really. Math zero. Science, zero, unless you take it upon yourself to construct hypothesis regarding it's functions and discuss them with your child. Technology, well, ok it can connect to your phone, but that doesn't mean it teaches them anything about it. Engineering, minor, in the sense that they can work on stacking things and making doll houses.Other than the lights and electric motors to make windmills and merry go rounds turn, this is not much different than a Lego or Knex set. The other difference is that there are wall panels so the idea mainly is to construct a sort of doll house. Her older brother is into robotics and she was longing for her own kit of some sorts. The negative reviews made me nervous. However, as soon as she received it she started building right away. She loves open-ended playing and building. When she builds with legos, she freely builds. Therefore, I knew that the lack of instructions for this set would work fine for her. She did look at the pictures to build some items but then was just as excited to make her own creations. The pieces are very versatile and once you understand how they can work together, the possibilities are endless! We did go to their website roominatetoy.com to get inspiration. She loves the circuits and making things spin and light up.
