The miking is very close and dry (no reverberation or warmth). Mr. Letzbor takes rubato liberties that would make Rachmaninov blush -- lots of tempo variations, pauses on individual notes (some for the rolled double or triple stops, some just "because." Bach is still Bach, even when played solo, and wants to operate within a predictable metric framework. I found this approach really difficult to connect to.To get into the soul of the violin sonatas and partitas, listen to either of Nathan Milstein's recordings ( from 1954  ( also 1954 ) or  from 1975  ( also 1975 )),  Yehudi Menuhin's 1936 recording  ( also here ), Menuhin's  1976 recording  ( also here ),  Ingrid Matthews , Rachel Podger , James Ehnes , Gottfried Schneider  or Gidon Kremer's 1981 recording on  Philips  or  Decca  (I don't like  Kremer's 2005 on ECM  nearly as much), or  Midori Seiler . I am also very fond of  Hopkinson Smith's transcriptions for lute , a  transcription for harpsichord , and of course no life is fully lived without deep immersion into  the Busoni transcription of the Chaconne for piano . ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Como tener un violinista tocando en privado frente a nosotros. *by C***N on Reviewed in Mexico 🇲🇽 on June 11, 2017* Bach vivió en una época en la que la cultura sobre la danza francesa estaba bien establecida en Alemania, y la única forma de que un músico pueda entender este contexto de las Partitas es recurriendo a colección de danzas orquestales “Florilegium Primum” del compositor austriaco George Muffat, en donde se explica a detalle cómo deben tocarse cada una de sus danzas con el estilo francés de la época (1695).Gunar Letzbor y su ensamble Ars Antiqua Austria tienen muchos años promoviendo música barroca austriaca injustamente olvidada, y dentro de su amplio catalogo de grabaciones se encuentran discos dedicados a danzas austriacas, y entre ellas están las compuestas por Muffat, por lo que el maestro Letzbor no tiene ninguna dificultad en interpretar las Partitas de Bach desde este contexto histórico.Después de años de tocar estas piezas en conciertos, y estando a semanas de su cumpleaños número cincuenta, Gunar Letzbor decidió que era el momento adecuado para grabar su propia visión sobre esta obra.La idea principal es permitirnos escuchar el sonido como si fuésemos el propio artista, manteniendo el sonido natural del instrumento en todo momento, sin ninguna distorsión por reverberación (eco); ya que ¿para que se empeñaría alguien en dominar tanto su instrumento y su acústica natural, si los micrófonos y la edición van a distorsionar el sonido grabado del violín?Este disco solo incluye las Partitas, pero las Sonatas para violín también están disponibles en otro disco del mismo sello.
