I don't ever want to bother with a hearing aid anyway, but I'm not at a stage where something like that makes sense to start with. Since I only needed it as an assist, I ruled out getting a second one, believing one ear could handle what I needed it for.I started to go with cheaper models, but decided they're probably worth less than what you pay for them. So I started looking at more expensive ones. I didn't really like the idea of laying out that kind of money for one like this. I read the reviews - mostly one and two star so I knew what to look for as far as problems - and ordered it.I received it, put the battery in and played with settings. I found what I think was the answer to some of the complaints. First off, if the earpiece isn't in the canal, chances of feedback are pretty strong. Also two of the four settings had a ring to them, meaning it was just a little short of feedback. That particular problem can also happen if the volume it too high. I found two of the settings worked for me, so I tested mostly with those two and changed the volume around from time to time.I only needed this for part of my day (usually about 6 hours a few days a week). But I wore it for the first several days all of the time while I was awake and not showering. That way I could test battery life, comfort and usability. I wore the device until the battery started getting weak.I did as the instructions said and removed the battery when I wasn't wearing it. I have no idea how that would have affected the life of the battery other than I know it would have shortened it a lot.The first battery lasted 5 days during my test. Even at that stage I was able to increase the volume to get it back to where I needed it. So it might have lasted a little longer if I had to have it in an emergency.Most of the time I could tell it was there by volume in that ear. But it never felt uncomfortable. Sometimes I'd not even notice it, like if I was outside or in a room with no sounds being produced very close to me.Every now and then I'd get a slight bit of feedback or ringing. Usually that happened when my ear was very close to something (laying on my arm, for instance). Generally those times were always when there was less than a half inch between something and my ear. My phone never produced that, so it wasn't often that it happened.I only really have two gripes about this device, and one of those I knew about before I purchased it:1. The earpiece isn't adaptable to both ears with what's purchased. But I realize I can buy one online for th other ear and put on whichever one I want to use.2. Cleaning the tube is easy. Getting it back on sometimes takes a few tries. I always manage, but it seems like the thing that didn't work the first 5 tries finally works. Maybe I'm missing something on this one.The battery life I got indicates to me that I can get by on one battery for over 2 weeks (always taking the battery out when I'm not using it, of course). That's a real bargain as far as I'm concerned. And with the carrying case it comes with I can keep spares with me all of the time in case I run across a bad battery or something.Would I buy it again? You bet! (I hope I don't have to unless I do something dumb, like get it wet.) Using it has not saved my life or anything, but it sure stopped me from having to ask people to repeat things several times! Using just the one ear has worked great for me. When the exam was completed they were "recommending" to her two options. One for $8000 and one for $5500. I wasn't present for the exam, but later when I asked about her hearing loss, I was told 20-25 percent. Heck, for a 91 year old, that's not bad. Rather than waste a TON of $$$$ on an overrated and over-priced product, I ordered a LifeEar amplifier for her right ear only. Mom said that was the one where she sensed the most hearing difficulty. When the LifeEar arrived it took me about 10 minutes, tops, to figure it out. Took it to my mother at her assisted living and got the ball rolling. Bottom like is that she loves it, and it really enhances her ability to hear out of the right ear. She's so pleased with it that she went up and down the hallways asking her friends to talk to her, who she previously had trouble understanding. Any mental moron can figure out the difference between $8000 and $400. If this device works as well in the long term, then it will be worth every penny. It came well packed, well equipped with multiple spare batteries, very easy instructions, and a nice zip case to put the device in at night. My mother is a very high-maintenance, constantly complaining about everything woman, but with this device she is thrilled. If it can make her happy, it will make anybody happy!! If you, or an elderly parent, are diagnosed with some hearing loss, investigate these devices instead of the legal extortion that is offered by the Miracle Ear and similar high-end hearing aid operators. I can understand if you are as deaf as a post you may need a higher end, more sophisticated device, but for mild hearing loss the LifeEar is superb. Most patients, and their families, are just too ignorant of the product to ask. All they know is they have to get the first hearing aid they're told to get. It was out of warranty and I would have to pay $380 to have them "try" to fix it. No refund. I decided to try the LifeEar before jumping into this repair. I did not have high expectations due to the lower price of the LifeEar. I have been very pleasantly surprised. I've had the LifeEar for 6 days now and--except for a couple of minor quibbles--it works as well or better than the expensive unit! I cannot imagine ever spending for another "high end" unit given the great performance of the LifeEar. The quibbles: it lacks a little in fidelity with music and no telephone mode.
