The Last (Barley) Straw - It Works!
Once the warmer weather arrived it seemed as though the algae just grew so fast that I couldn't control it. I was using a chemical solution in the pond to try to control it, but it didn't appear to be helping at all. I had read reviews on Amazon and watched videos of others who have used barley straw, some successfully and some that it didn't work at all for them. So obviously I was skeptical about whether or not this product would remove the algae from my pond, not to mention I'd have to wait 30 days to find out if it would be successful. Let the photo speak for itself. In the photo you can see the BEFORE on the left taken on May 8th. The photo on the right is the AFTER taken on June 12th (about 35 days later). The barley straw in the back left in both photos (floating on left, then semi-submerged on right.) You can see the underwater pot on the right indicating the water has cleared up. I can see my fish again in the water! It does work. I'm a believer now. I should add that 2 loaves of barley straw are for a pond of up to 2500 gallons of water and my pond is around 2700 gallons.

works well --keep spares b/c they need to float
been using this brand for several years. such a simple thing to keep the algae down. the key point seems to be they need to float on the surface to work, and in a few weeks they sink---but i solved that. my pond is huge and i use 2 at a time, tie them around the middle with nylon string, wrap surplus strings around a brick on the side of the pond so they are easy to retrieve when they sink, and keep spare pair ready to swap out. then leave the wet ones to dry on the pond edge. usually 2 pairs keeps me going the whole season.

these work
These can be a great help in keeping water features clear. We use half of a bale in our small 400 gal water feature and it helps stabilize the water and add bacteria needed for pond start up.

Not sure if it does anything in my pond
I bought this to control algae in my fish pond, but I'm not really sure if it does anything. There seems to be slightly less algae, but I think the goldfish are eating it. It's not clear if the barley straw is helping or not.

Large Bales!
These Water Barley Straw Bales are so much bigger than I expected. I usually put two in my pond, especially during the hot, humid summer months, in order to prevent algae growth and to keep my fish healthy. Because of the size, I only needed to put one into the pond, and I am sure it will last for a long time. I highly recommend these for the size and the price.

Crystal Clear Water
I have a 1600 gallon backyard pond with water fall and under gravel filter system. It's very hot here in Tucson right now and my fairly new pond was beginning to turn green. I dropped two of these Barley Straw Bales in the pond. After about a week the one at the base of the water feature sunk. The second bale had been placed up at the top of the water fall in the reservoir. It too sunk. However, a week later my water began to loose it's green tint and I could see to the bottom of the pond at the 3 foot deep end. Today a week later the water is crystal clear. The bales are good for 6 months and replacements should be dropped in during the fifth month before you pull the decaying first bales out of the water. Mark your calendar. The instruction that come with the bales says to keep them afloat or to remove and dry them out and place them back in the water but I haven't done that. They'll probably decay sooner than six months as a result but for now they are working fine. I have no regrets buying and using this product.
