I have included pics on how to assemble ... they key is to unscrew the ring that is already on the piece ( pic 1) place the piece with the screws sticking out on the sides with the open side facing down ( pic 2) then fit the metal shade up into that ( pic 3) take the original piece from pic 1 and go up inside the metal shade and turn it until it is tight ( pic 4) lastly, put batteries in the bulb and turn it in till it fits and enjoy how beautiful they are !!! ( pic 5)... I too, was unable to fit the bulb in but realized the problem and thought I would share!!
