The biological world operates on a multitude of scales--from molecules to cells to tissues to organisms to ecosystems. Throughout all these levels runs a common thread: the communication and onward passage of information--from cell to cell, from organism to organism and, ultimately, from generation to generation. But how does this information--no more than a static repository of data--come alive to govern the processes that constitute life? The answer lies in the concerted action of molecular components which cooperate through a series of carefully regulated processes to bring the information in our genome to life. These components and processes lie at the heart of one of the most fascinating subjects to engage the minds of scientists today: molecular biology. Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function offers a fresh, distinctive approach to the teaching of molecular biology. It is an approach that reflects the challenge of teaching a subject that is in many ways unrecognizable from the molecular biology of the 20th century--a discipline in which our understanding has advanced immeasurably, but about which many questions remain to be answered. It is written with several guiding themes in mind: - A focus on key principles provides a robust conceptual framework on which students can build a solid understanding of the discipline; - An emphasis on the commonalities that exist between the three kingdoms of life, and the discussion of differences between the three kingdoms where such differences offer instructive insights into molecular processes and components, gives students an accurate depiction of our current understanding of the conserved nature of molecular biology, and the differences that underpin biological diversity; - An integrated approach demonstrates how certain molecular phenomena have diverse impacts on genome function by presenting them as themes that recur throughout the book, rather than as artificially separated topics At heart, molecular biology is an experimental science, and a central element to the understanding of molecular biology is an appreciation of the approaches taken to yield the information from which concepts and principles are deduced. Yet there is also the challenge of introducing the experimental evidence in a way that students can readily comprehend. Molecular Biology responds to this challenge with Experimental Approach panels, which branch off from the text in a clearly-signposted way. These panels describe pieces of research that have been undertaken, and which have been particularly valuable in elucidating different aspects of molecular biology. Each panel is carefully cross-referenced to the discussion of key molecular biology tools and techniques, which are presented in a dedicated chapter at the end of the book. Beyond this, Molecular Biology further enriches the learning experience with full-colour, custom-drawn artwork; end-of-chapter questions and summaries; relevant suggested further readings grouped by topic; and an extensive glossary of key terms. Among the students being taught today are the molecular biologists of tomorrow; these individuals will be in a position to ask fascinating questions about fields whose complexity and sophistication become more apparent with each year that passes. Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function is the perfect introduction to this challenging, dynamic, but ultimately fascinating discipline. Review: Understandable - I liked the clarity; It would take a fantastic memory to learn it all, but it is all there. Review: Awesome - Awesome book. I love molecular biology. Really. Everyone should read this. Great for the beach. Easy easy easy read. I promise

Good flow, logical material progression, inspirational, some mistakes, seems rushed toward end.
The flow is good. The authors present a very logical progression from basics to high level functions. Illustrations are very fantastic, one of the best I've encountered in a textbook. They are well thought out and informative. Most of the time, the picture says it all and is very intuitive, with the figure description just confirming what you saw with a tad of extra detail. Experimental highlights are real interesting and inspiring. They impart a sense of nostalgia, even if the events predate your life. In whole, these sidelights reveal how some of the general knowledge was uncovered and are often awe inspiring to see how creative and insightful scientists were, especially without the modern tools of today. They also reveal that sometimes discoveries are made just accidentally, but wonderfully lucky in finding out something that no one even imagined. They give you a sense of appreciation for basic research for the sake of knowledge. Some are "tough reads" though and require knowledge of…for example, material in the final online chapter…or some external research into the topics. There are periodic mistakes in the beginning. However, it does gets better towards the end of the text. The material in the final "download" chapter is very brief and doesn't explain a whole lot of stuff. One of the noticeable features of this chapter is that some of the figures are quite ambiguous and, unlike previously mentioned, require you to delve deeply into the descriptions and figure out what they are trying to convey. Perhaps a little help from the internet wouldn’t hurt either. Overall, it feels like this chapter was a rush job that they had to finish during a publication deadline. And since they didn't make the deadline, they had to make it online. And they still ran out of time!

The Textbook is Incomplete
The last chapter of this textbook, which happens to be one of the chapters I bought this for, is not included. The textbook refers you to a website to view the last chapter, but the website does not appear to exist anymore. I feel like I completely wasted my money getting a hard copy, only to be told I had to go online to read it. Update: I was finally able to open the link in the textbook so that I could download the last chapter. But the last chapter is 112 pages, which I will have to print using my own paper and ink. If I had wanted to do that, I would have printed the electronic textbook my professor provided us, rather than wasting my money purchasing what I thought was a hard copy version.

Wish kindle
The book itself and the information inside are amazing. However I wish there was a kindle version so I could read it on my tablet and it didn’t weigh a million pounds in my hands as I read. Or at minimum they printed a hardback so I wouldn’t have to worry about damaging it as much. Amazing book but monstrously huge book

Missing the modern essentials!
Textbook doesn’t describe common techniques like PCR, inverse PCR, Gibson cloning etc. They are included in the index and info would be in Chapter 19 but the boom just skips this chapter and says to read it online. Pathetic.

Mistakes and Inaccuracies
The topic is extremely interesting, but the mistakes and inaccuracies are distracting. Please do not refer to DNA as a "blueprint", not in a book on molecular biology. There were some more mistakes, most likely just misprints, but definitely could (should) be better.

Great choice for students
As a second year biotech student I think the material covered in this book is superb. Only thing to be aware of is that the last chapter (19) is only available online as a pdf and not included in the actual book.

Good book
I’m first year medical student and The book is amazing very well made, I will use to study molecular and some biochemistry topics. The book arrived a little bit damage on the cover so I give 4 stars just for that.

galaxy issues
Great book, but I was disappointed how this book won't open on my galaxy s3. I have the latest kindle reader from the play store but when I press on the book it says not compatible with this device. Other than that, no complaints:)
