While I was hoping they would have wires in the ribbon part, the trade off is that you can completely untie the bow if you just want to use the patterned scrunchie. You could also mix and match with the scrunchies and bows if you wanted, although that might ruin the sort of seamless look. Mine don't seem to have the office style rubber band inside like others have said, but none of them seem to have split seams yet so I can't tell for certain, Just based off feeling them.
