My old one is over 20 years old and was sticking and not creating a clean hole. The new one works like a champ! There are NO directions on or in the box on how to unlock the lock so that you can use it. Other people have mentioned this too. I tried You Tube videos, but they didn't explain it well enough so I looked for written directions on the web. The following is a direct copy of what I found that worked in a second plus a few extra helpful words! The key is: You have to press down on the handle/punch arm with one hand while sliding the locking device, at the base of the handle/punch arm, to the unlocked position. That is all it took to work well! To unlock a Swingline hole punch, you need to: Place the punch on a firm surface. Hold down the punch arm and move the gray piece, at the base of the punch arm, to the left. It will unlock.
