There is about a 1/16" lip on the top of the 'bottom' compartment. The 8-1/8" includes the 1/16" lip (for clearance sake). I just read the other answer by the MFR after I had typed this and those dimensions are definitely confirmed! **Q: what are the dimensions inside the cabinet?** A: I'd like to know the answer to this as well.
