I then positioned the pump on the floor of the tank and covered the pump directly with a piece of the screen mesh which was then weighed down with a 3" layer of hydroballs. I placed a sheet of screen mesh on top of the hydroballs from wall to wall, followed a layer of sphagnum moss and finally the coconut coir substrate. Bearded dragons live in dryer climates. This waterfall also requires substrate, and bearded dragons do best on carpet or tiles. Please do not buy this for your bearded dragon **Q: Is the pump on this noisy or pretty quiet?** A: It was pretty quiet. I had it in my bedroom and was never bothered by it. I have stopped using it, however, because it got clogged easily even with the substrate mesh barrier. That may have been my fault in not being careful enough when setting it up. **Q: how large is the substrate mesh? Also how big is the bag of clay pebbles? I have a 40 gallon vivarium I'm redoing. Thanks** A: The mesh is about 18x18. The bag of pebbles would put about a 1/2-3/4 inch (ish) layer in a ten gallon tank. I have a 18x18x18 cage and it took THREE bags of hydroballs to fill it that I had to go out and buy separately, because one did not come with this package (why, I have no idea?) 1) The pump: One out of Five stars. Honestly, the pump is not worth it. Go to an outdoor pond, pool, or specialty aquarium shop and get one. This pump is VERY loud for the amount of water it pumps (or in my case, doesn't). When I opened it up to find out why it wasn't pumping, it turns out that the prongs that propel the water through the pump were cracked and/or missing.... there was only one working prong, which wasn't enough to propel the water with enough force up the output tube. 2) The mesh: ZERO out of Five stars / Five out of Five stars. It's just mesh, so why give it such a bad review? Because I didn't get any. 5/5 if I did get some. 3) The hydroballs: ZERO out of Five stars / Three out of Five stars. Same as above. I did not get any in my package for some reason. But the bags I did purchase, about 1/4th of them were broken and the rest were EXTREMELY dirty, no matter how many times I washed them... so they get 3/5 stars. 4) The tubing: Four out of Five Stars.
