That would be the ideal set up. I mounted the base to the deck of my 48 Pacifica for hauling my dinghy on board. I don’t have a single straight line on my boat. I used the included base mount, but I had to fabricate my own mount to secure it to my stanchion. It pivots great. There is a pin included that you can use to prevent it from pivoting when needed. It is designed ti pivot. I haul my dinghy up and pivot to bring out of water onto foredeck.
