If the butter-like surface of Midori's MD paper is what you need, buying the notebooks with a single cover that can hopefully last several notebook cycles is an economic solution for writing on premium, fountain pen-friendly paper. It doesn't necessarily look like a notebook that Indiana Jones would carry, but the fact that the notebook/cover combo doesn't draw attention to itself is potentially a plus for many people. You can now count me as a genuine Midori fanboy! Review: Beautiful and sturdy - This cover is a beautiful light pinky-peach and fits the Midori MD A5 perfectly. It is paper, but is indeed quite sturdy and almost evokes natural leather with its embossed front logo and top/bottom stitching (there is a natural leather one, but besides being spendy I like that the color of the paper cover will remain mostly intact). The cover may fade a tiny bit over time as well as absorb stains and smudges, but I’ve been pretty careless/rough and personally don’t notice a huge difference.
