We have it directly underneath the hardwood floor, between the hardwood and subfloor. Works excellent. In the thinset or tile parts of house, this has little to no sound improvement. I definitely would not use this in thinset/tile again. **Q: Would this work on stairs? Thank you.** A: It should. You'd probably have to trim it so it was able to lay flat on the tread. Given that we're in a pretty cold climate, we thought we'd add some in-floor heat while we were at it. We settled on some heated pads from Thermosoft. They sell their own filler pads, but it seemed a little expensive. That's when I found this Insulayment. It seems to be the exact same stuff, and it was a perfect match for the thickness of the heated pads we purchased. It was a breeze to cut and install, and saved us a little money in the process. ### ⭐ 1.0 out of 5 stars Mold food... *by D***Y on Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2020* I am writing this review to help someone else avoid being in the same circumstance that I am. The person who redid the floors in our house used this kind of padding underneath, which is apparently a great mood growing medium. Our freezer leaked, the floor got soaked, and started growing mold. We had to tear up the floor and treat the subfloor and we will have to replace the flooring as were able. Mold can cause chronic health issues, and the way we've changed how we build things using mold growing mediums as an 'energy efficient" barrier is part of the reason for a lot of chronic illnesses. Now we have this unsealed on the edges wood floor with mold food underneath all throughout our house. We will probably have to sand the whole thing down and refinish it at some point, maybe with beeswax. Don't use this stuff.
