Manic Street Preachers - Why Are These Guys Unkown In The U.S.?

*by S***Y on Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2013*

The Manic Street Preachers are a band that are pretty much unknown here in the U.S.A, but seem to have had quite a bit of success in Europe. I first got into them a few years ago when Classic Rock Magazine named "Journal For Plague Lovers" as one of the top albums of the year. I picked it up, having never heard a single Manic song before, and loved the album right away. When I saw this 2 CD compilation was going to be released I had to check it out to get a good overview of their career. Although many of these songs are probably already familiar to more hard core Manic's fans, they are mostly new to me. I believe these were all released as singles and it is somewhat amazing to me the range that this band displays, going from all out punk, to pop-ish sounding stuff that would fit just about any top 40 radio format. This band is literally all over the place musically. The early stuff, with lyrics by long lost guitarist Richie Edwards, rounds out nicely with the latter material that would see the band evolve into many different directions from their punk roots. James Dean Bradfield has to have one of the most emotive voices in rock today and is able to handle both raunchy punk and power pop with equal dexterity. Nicky Wire is the perfect foil for Bradfield's lead, providing more rough edged background vox that blend together perfectly. The playing on all of these songs is tight and concise, and although these guys might not be instrumental virtuosos, they are great at what they do. The mind boggles at the fact that some of these songs never made it in America. "Kevin Carter", "Australia", "Love Of Richard Nixon", "Autumn Song", "It's Not War" were several examples of tracks that stuck in my head immediately upon first listen, and they are just the tip of the iceberg. The amazing duet with the lead singer of the Cardigans, "Your Love Is Not Enough" seems like it could not help but be a hit anywhere in the world it is so good. Maybe the early punk stuff, or the band's rather upfront political stance hurt them here in the States, but it all just seems very strange to me. The DVD portion of the package is also very cool with all of the band's videos collected together. Again, for me these are all new, having never seen any of them air here in the states. My only critisism of the collection is that there is no material from the album that introduced me to the band "Journal For Plague Lovers" since apparently no single was ever released from it. In the end, my conclusion is that this is a great collection of music that probably just scratches the surface of what this band is all about. Why this band is not huge in North America boggles my mind. I don't know if they ever tour over here anymore, but they are now on my bucket list to try to catch live one of these years.

While never being a die-hard fan of The Manics, I have seen them live and also enjoyed their hits. This collection through the years is excellent. Presentation in this pack is very nicely done indeed. The bonus features are good and many.Huge fan or just like them, you will like this Complete Singles collection.
