In using it along with the main text, I found the idiomatic translations of Greek passages helpful in writing my own literal translations, which guided me toward thinking in ancient Greek. As an elderly student who studied ancient Greek in college and as a former college teacher of English as a foreign language, I found "An Independent Study Guide to Reading Greek" and the main text to have integrated modern-language teaching methods in such a way as to generate true fluency. I found reading and listening to the main-text passages five times at sitting and then rescheduling for review later at intervals of 3 days, 10 days, 30 days and 60 days to be a sure way toward reading fluency. I should add that those passages that were not recorded by the authors, I read aloud on my own. Review: The best way to learn classical Greek - In the past year i have worked my way through three introductory courses in classical Greek, including the excellent Intensive Course developed at Fordham, but until I discovered the three-volume course designed by the classical scholars at Cambridge University I found nothing that was completely satisfactory. The Cambridge set excels in several respects. First, it gets you reading adaptations of major Greek writers from the first lesson, along with the relevant grammar. Reading in the first volume is accompanied by grammatical study in the second, and--unique among the texts I have seen--the third volume, the Independent Study Guide, translates all the passages in the Reading volume and gives the correct answers to the exercises in the Grammar volume. Thus the student is able to check his/her own work as if there were a teacher standing by. For me the result has been that for the first time I feel solidly grounded when I read, and I am retaining much more than I did with any other textbook (and this includes Chase and Phillips, which I tried years ago and got nowhere). This is one of the good ones. It focuses on accessibility and multiple method language acquisition. Unlike many Greek texts out there (e.g., I've heard so many students say this of Hansen&Quinn), there's no attitude of "only the best should study Greek, and if you can't adjust to outdated pedagogy then maybe that's not you." This combines the best of clearly presented grammar approach books like Crosby&Schaeffer with the reading and narrative approach of Athenaze. Is it a little annoying to have to buy three books to teach yourself? Yeah, but it's 10000% worth it.
