Joseph Cornell (1903โ1972) was one of the 20th centuryโs leading exponents of collage and assemblage. A connoisseur of an astonishing array of subjects, Cornellโs captivation with bygone imagery encompassed astronomical charts and geographical maps, Italian and Spanish Old Master paintings, historical ballet, early film, literature, poetry and ornithology. Most iconic among his works are his box constructionsโmicrocosmic curiosity cabinetsโfilled with once-precious fragments that he collected in thrift shops in his native New York. Joseph Cornell: Wanderlust is a landmark publication examining this remarkable work. It brings together some of Cornellโs most compelling assemblages and box constructions (including Medici slot machines, soap-bubble sets and animal habitats). The contributors raise questions about Cornellโs artistic processes while drawing parallels with historical modes of inquiry such as connoisseurship, exploration and classification. Great illustrations.
This is a lovely book, excellent reproductions. My one qualm is that the binding cracks alarmingly when the book is opened, I worry that it might not have the longevity I expect from a hardbound book.

A stunning book
A colorful catalogue the size of a coffee cable book that made a great gift for a Joseph Cornell fan. Many thanks for making this profusely illustrated book available at half price.

Seller sold a very damaged art book at a high price.
I am extremely disappointed that the seller sold an art book with 20 art illustrations cut out of a very expensive exhibition catalog with many other pages sliced at the binding where pages were removed.

This book contains a great selection of Cornell's works covering all his professional career
This book contains a great selection of Cornell's works covering all his professional career. Wonderful illustrations and very interesting, enlightening texts accompany each one of the catalogue works, all in a serious and profound style but using a clear language affordable to amateurs like me too. Only one of the catalogued works is absurdly reproduced quite smaller than the rest of the exhibited works (altogether eighty), since this plate is full-page too. I mean the number 60, "Untitled - Medici Boy", owned by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Anyway, I unreservedly recommend this book to everybody who are interested in Joseph Cornell. Finally, I find also very recommended "Shadowplay, Eterniday" (Thames and Hudson, 2003) over the same subject - the latter unfortunately abuses of the black page background in its layout, beeing superb for the rest.

Lots of information, big pictures of his work.
A beautiful book with lots of information about Joseph Cornell's life and works. Lots of big colour pictures and comprehensive details on each piece of work. The cover design is beautiful. My only negative comment is there is no dust jacket so the cover is unprotected. I have already accidentally marked it!

Does justice to the work
Lots of good illustrations and full colour plates with commentary, at times a tad pretentious, but always informative. A very useful introduction to Cornell and his world.

An excellent purchase.
Fabulous book detailing the work of this quirky, astonishing artist. My friend, a graphic designer, is especially impressed with the quality of the design, print and 'feel' of the book. An excellent purchase.
