How do these attach to the handbag?

With the existing buckle (hardware) that's attached to your handbag. You will take off the old strap and simply replace with the new. The buckle that came with the new set I didn't need/use.

my tote is approx 14 inches wide and 12 inches deep and they were great they are good quality for the price i dont know about your bucket purse

No, the black straps come with GOLD buckles. I just received mine in the mail today and they were gold.
