The Rayovac 9V battery in my smoke detector can make it twitch slightly, but not really work. With the load of the solenoid (which I measured to be about 20 Ohms), the 9V battery can only put out about 300mA. The listing indicates that the solenoid takes 300mA to activate at 24V, so about 800mA at 9V. The solenoid would require 2.6 times the current that my generic 9V battery can put out. **Q: I want to make it push when voltage is applied. Do you just use the opposite end of the solenoid for push versus pull?** A: That's the way I'm using it. When you apply 12 volts the end with the acorn nut moves outward. However, you must leave a small space (3mm or so) between the nut and what you're pushing so that the rod can start moving before it meets any resistance otherwise it won't push anything! **Q: What are the current requirements?** A: I'm not sure about your question. The voltage and current applied to to the solenoid has a direct relationship to how fast and how strong the solenoid acts. It is actually less than 7mm. The operating current is specified as 600 mA at 12 volts, but is nearly twice that. I can't guess whether these discrepancies are the result of carelessness, or deception.
