Whalestoe Letters

Great companion piece to a great novel. I recommend reading House of Leaves first, but definitely read this after.

Great as a stand alone work -- you don't need to navigate the four-dimensional maze of House of Leaves with its tar pits and quick sand in order to read and love this work. As I mother of five I could feel her pain on so many levels. While I'm not institutionalized, there are days that I feel like I am losing my mind.

Bought it as a gift and no complaints. No issues with quality of book.

I really enjoyed reading the Whalestoe Letters when I read House of Leaves, so I felt like I had to get my hands on this book. Reading just the Whalestoe Letters without House of Leaves was still good. I really like the story that's told within it, and I liked the psychological deterioration that you can see in some of the letters... But... outside of House of Leaves, I feel like the Whalestoe Letters don't pack as big of a punch. They meant so much more with the rest of House of Leaves, so just reading them on their own, while it's still a good story, it just doesn't have as much weight to it.

A lovely twist to go along with the main story

This book is simply an anthology of the letters sent between Johnny Truant and his mentally ill mother, Pelafina during her stay in a psychiatric hospital. While a majority of these exchanged messages are included in the appendix of House of Leaves, there are a few additions. This text seems unnecessary because it doesn't quite expand on the story, but as someone who was enthralled by HoL I found it pleasing to have a separate collection of the depth creating digression. I can only recommend The Whalestoe Letters to those whom were truly engaged by the horror of House of Leave, which I trust is anyone whom gave it a read.

Maybe the saddest book I've ever read. And it's a mere Appendix to entire other Novel "House of Leaves" so you can only imagine what that book is like

I am very happy to have this in my collection. It's just something I felt that I needed after finishing House of Leaves. It feels personal, in a weird way. Absolutely fantastic.

This is a companion book to House of Leaves, obviously you should read HoL first. But this is a nice add on and does stand alone as an interesting study. Recommended.

Takes approx. 2 hours to read the whole thing. This book provides eleven new letters from Pelafina to Johnny that do not appear in House of Leaves. If you are looking for some insane plot twist, there is none in these new letters - they simply flesh out the whole correspondence a bit.

After reading House of leaves, my daughter loves this genre and enjoyed this book a lot and was reading it to friends of hers that also love that book.
