Does it have a slot for sd card?

Nook Simple Touch has micro SD card slot, supporting up to 32GB. I am using 8GB and find it more than enough for all books and comics i need.

Is it possible to read using this product at night?

I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1935009362/ref=oh_aui_reorder_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for use with mine and love it. The single AAA battery is great, I use a rechargeable one. This is my absolute all-time favorite reader. So sad they're not making them any more.

do I need Wi-Fi to use the tablet

Yes, in order to activate the tablet and download ebooks you need to use WiFi. But you don't need Wi-Fi to read your books after you have downloaded them over WiFi.

Can the books for the Nook be purchase on Amazon or do we have to go to Barnes & Noble?

I don't buy books, I get them from my library, but it looks to me that the offers come from Barnes & Noble. Just wanted to say that, when my previous Nook was stolen and I bought and registered this one, all my books came back on it.
