Excellent
I didn't play the first Mass Effect (PS3 owner), and didn't try Mass Effect 2 until I picked it up last month for $15. All I can say is that I enjoyed Mass Effect 2 alot, and instantly preordered the 3rd as soon as I beat the 2nd which was great since I didn't have to wait as long as all the people who've been fans of Mass Effect since relase. I haven't gotten that far yet but so far the game is living up to my expectations. The graphics are very good (although there is some lag during cutscenes at times). The music is great, and of course the voice acting is still one of the best I've heard in a video game. I can't give anything away about the story since I haven't even finished it and don't want to spoil any of it but it's looking like it's going to be fantastic as well. The gameplay of Mass Effect 3 isn't anything revolutionary by any means but it's still a very fun game to play. Using powers is as fun as ever, there's nothing more satisfying than lifting an enemy in the air and slamming him into a wall. The shooting in the game feels mostly the same as the 2nd, which means it's fun but not spectacular by any means. I'm actually getting annoyed at times by how the "X" button has so many functions, (sprint, roll, get into cover) especially now that enemies have grenades. I've already died a couple times when the enemy chucks grenades at me and I want to roll away but I end up getting stuck in cover. It's annoying but it wont' stop me from enjoying the game. The addition of multiplayer has been great as well. It's been a blast to play teaming up with people to fight online although I've only played with strangers (didn't use much teamwork). I also think they need to add a mute button online, it's been annoying having to listen to people blabber on for the whole match but I'm sure it's something that will be added soon. The multiplayer doesn't seem too deep by any means but it's understandable with how much content there is in single player. The multiplayer is fun while it lasts, but it's not something I can see myself playing long after I've gotten tired of the single player. **Update** Finished the game a couple weeks ago. The ending was pretty bad but it did not ruin the series for me as it did for others. I probably wasn't as invested into the series as most other people were so while the ending was bad, the rest of the game was great.

The Roleplayer's RPG (spoiler-free)
Mass Effect 3 is a shooter set in a futuristic sci-fi shooter, but it is still the best roleplaying game on the market, in my opinion. (and I am a huge fan of games like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ). To that end, my review focuses on the roleplay elements. It also assumes you are new to the series. - Characters: The characters are people. They have personalities and emotions. And they aren't just automated sidekicks, they are comrades that you build bonds with, and each contributes to the story in a significant and unique way. This does not feel like your typical RPG where there's that sense that you're the one fully intelligent being walking around a world inhabited by cookie cutter NPCs. With that in mind, RPG main characters usually have a "blank" feeling about them. You, the player, customize the looks and then define their personality based on your actions and choices, but much of the specifics are left to your imagination. Mass Effect also stands out here as well. Commander Shepard is just as customizable as the rest--Shepard will always be *your* Shepard--but he or she has a voice, mannerisms, and facial expressions. Shepard feels vivid and alive in ways RPG heroes usually do not. - Dialogue: Like other RPGs, you interact with other characters via a dialogue tree, choosing your own responses. ME provides the most conversational version of this model that I have seen before. As mentioned above, both characters actually speak, and the dialogue options change naturally as the conversation advances. Again, in ME dialogue feels more natural and real. - Consequences: Like any good RPG, your actions impact the world around you. In ME, your choices have significant and obvious consequences. If you destroy a whole race, it will change your game. If you pursue a romance with one character over another, it will change your game. And so forth and so on. Of course the story follows the same arc no matter what, but what you do does determine how it will all play out and who will be at your side. Your choices make the journey and the story as you experience the game's narrative. - Combat: Combat in Mass Effect is ranged third-person. It is a shooter but there are various powers that help mix it up a bit as well. Mass Effect 3 excels over the previous 2 games by implementing better melee (but you will still be in a shoot out most of the time) as well as a cover system that lets you interact with the battlefield's elements more realistically. Probably the biggest surprise were the enemies. They are clever, quick, and actually use strategy and tactics during a fight. They aren't just popping in and out of cover to shoot at you. They run, duck, and roll, providing a real challenge. - The Ending: The ending has caused quite a controversy among fans. Many are unhappy, but many are also pleased with its open-endedness. Personally, I think this reveals how invested and important this franchise is to people. And, in my opinion, no matter how you end up feeling at the end, the game is more than worth it.
