## Description

Just Mercy (DVD)A powerful and thoughtprovoking true story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.]]>

Review: Essential Viewing! - Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2019 film, “Just Mercy,” tells the true story of Walter McMillian and Bryan Stevenson, who worked to appeal McMillian’s murder conviction. The film stars Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson, Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian, Brie Larson as Eva Ansley, Rob Morgan as Herbert Richardson, Tim Blake Nelson as Ralph Myers, Rafe Spall as Tommy Chapman, and Karan Kendrick as Minnie McMillian. The story begins with McMillian’s arrest for murder, showing how he was racially profiled from the beginning. He tries appealing his case, but has no successes. Later, Harvard law graduate Bryan Stevenson travels to Alabama to provide legal representation to those who cannot afford it. He and Eva Ansley found the Equal Justice Initiative before meeting with death row inmates. There, he meets McMillian and begins looking into his case. Despite facing hostility as they work, Stevenson and Ansley find proof of witness tampering and other irregularities in the prosecution against McMillian. They move for the case to be reopened, but a judge denies it. In a last-ditch attempt to highlight the injustices they’ve uncovered, Stevenson and McMillian go on 60 Minutes to rally public support. They successfully get the Supreme Court of Alabama to hear the case, where McMillian gets justice. The screenplay by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Lanham is perfectly structured to tell their story, while every actor perfectly embodies their role so that the film takes on a documentary-like quality. The film doesn’t shy away from showing the brutality of systemic racism, which makes it a powerful piece of art that can open audiences’ eyes to the structural inequality around them. Unlike films examining these issues in earlier historic periods, the relatively recent timeline of the film (beginning in 1989) helps to show that racism is not a problem of the past. In keeping with this goal, Warner Brothers made this film free to rent for June 2020, helping people to educate themselves about the racial inequality built into the criminal justice system.
Review: Movie Madness - Great movie, very thankful for the free movie ticket from desertcart
