The screen lights up a nice shade of indigo blue for a few seconds when touching any button. At rest, the screen shows information, but is not lit. This thermostat has a compartment for 2 AAA batteries but using the batteries is optional -- the thermostat takes power from the AC unit, and the batteries are there for backup in case the power is off at the AC unit (e.g. during a power outage or AC unit maintenance). Appearance-wise, it's good looking with a clean modern white design. One nice touch is that the thermostat is perfectly silent and doesn't click when commanding to turn on/off the AC unit. When you set the swing look how in the booklet and set it to - 4 this will keep it cycling off and on longer . The maker of this says that it will not work in rv's but it works well also i have seen others say they have used it in RV 'S .
