Homegrown Herbs: A Complete Guide to Growing, Using, and Enjoying More than 100 Herbs [Tammi Hartung, Saxon Holt, Rosemary Gladstar] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Homegrown Herbs: A Complete Guide to Growing, Using, and Enjoying More than 100 Herbs Review: Delightfully accessible information on herblore - Fabulous book with loads of color photos. There are plenty of recipes and ways to utilize herbs in everyday living, plus information on planting, growing, harvesting, and propagating herbs. The books is well-organized, making it easy to dip in and out of when I'm looking for specific information. The author has also included multiple charts showing which herbs prefer what types of growing conditions, what herbs are useful for what, their heights and colors, propagation methods, and more. I love the charts, as they allow me to compare and contrast several different plants easily, as well as get a quick "sum-up" of the plant's habits, needs, and benefits. A large section of the book is dedicated to a sort of encyclopedia of herbs, with color pictures and a few columns of information for each herb. This is a great book for anyone interested in growing their own herbs, whether you're looking to plant a few kitchen herbs in a pot on the windowsill, or dig up the entire backyard for an apothecary garden. With garden designs and plenty of information on individual herbs, this is an excellent handbook. Review: Thorough - Very thorough especially for a new gardener.

Worth putting on your shelf
This is a great reference. I saw it recommended online by a gardener. I bought it as a gift for a friend who is an herbalist. When it came in I skimmed through it. It's well-written, well-illustrated, and full of good information well-organized. I'm eager to see what my friend the herbalist thinks of it. I suspect she is going to love it. I'm starting my own herb garden this year, and this is the kind of book that would be a great reference on my shelf. I only gave it 4 stars. I was trending toward 4.5. I'm a hard sell when it comes to rating books. For me to give it 5 stars it would have to give me a foot massage. In other words, I'm a tough grader. Keep that in mind. Yay! for this passionately researched garden book!

Just what the beginner herbalist needs!
I don't usually write book reviews because I find it is very subjective and based on specific needs. I have been gardening (vegetables) for quite a few years, but this year I decided to add a "medicinal" herb garden to the mix. I did tons of research online for information, but I found I was coming up short on some key planting, growing and caring specifics for herbs. I went through tons of the book descriptions and other reviews and came upon this one. It has a good mix of information on site location, plant care, pest prevention, cultivation, drying, storing and using the herbs. While I know I will need something with more details on how to use my herbs as I progress and want have more elaborate herbal mixture and preparation (there is information in this book, but just the basics), this will more than get me started with planting and caring for my herbs so that I have something to use at the end of the season. I am very excited about my medicinal herb garden. I highly recommend this book if you are dabbling in herbs. If you already have experience with herbs, you may find this book a little too basic.

Great learning tool
This is a great learning tool for beginners. I've learned so much. about each plants care, how to harvest, how to dry the herbs, how to use the herbs, benefits and downfalls of each herb to pinpoint each herbs use. Also weed that can be foraged and eaten. I have a few plants that didn't produce much this year that I planted, but the purslane (a tasty weed) is in abundance, so win win on that weed.

Excellent Reference for the Herb Gardebers
We've got several herb books already but when I saw this one, I had to have it. Love the way it's set up -- this is the nuts and bolts of herb gardening.... not just a listing of herbs as much as it's a guide to how to build a garden, how to choose a site, how to amend the soil, then it gives lists of herbs and their soil and growth requirements so you know wt is going to grow best. Includes great ideas for preserving and using the herbs as well. I have plenty of books that give me info about an individual herb, but none that area a comprehensive guide, as this one is, for actually putting the herb garden together. We are long time expert gardeners and I've had an herb garden for years, but after I got this book, I made significant changes and additions to our garden based on the book. I consider it a must have even if you've already got a garden!

Great Reference Book
This book is absolutely full of so much valuable information. It contains multiple pictures of not only the herbs, but many other things as well such as cultivating, propagation, gardening, etc. It discusses how to design your garden, how to have good soil, maintenance and disease control. It has great ideas for how to use the herbs in not only food, but for your body as well. This is a great book to add to your herbal reference list. It cross references the Latin names as well. There is just so much valuable information in here, I'm glad I purchased it.
