I put two coats on. The Kilz fumes are noticeable, but do dissipate after several days & are definitely less objectionable that the odor it is blocking. **Q: can i buy kilz max in 5 gal buckets** A: Yes! And we did! **Q: Washing with krud kutter first! grease fire smoke? smell and staining? is this the best water-based primer for this?** A: Make sure area is completely dry and free of dirt etc. before painting. This paint stops odors from animal urine and other stronger odors - smoke, Will cover stain marks on wood surfaces with a 2 coat application. Needless to say it needed major cleaning + primer. Before painting the floors & walls we used this Killz primer ALL over & are doing the walls next - this stuff did the job! No odor, no stains, crazy coverage. We did two coats to be safe but odor was gone with just one. 5 gallons went a LONG WAY. 10/10 recommend - worth every penny & will restore the surface like NEW. This is for the nastiest of jobs. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kilz with no odor *by J***R on October 1, 2025* This primer is the best! No odor, great coverage, and water based...so soap and water clean up. I've used it to prime all the wood trim in my house...baseboards, window trim, and door trim. It goes on smooth and is just the right consistency. I used 2 coats as I was going over dark stained wood...no sanding necessary and it adhered well, covered completely, with no bleed throu. I'm told I can use it to paint my old dirty ceilings without having to use any paint...I'll be trying that this winter, so I know I'll need more! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ By far the best on the market! *by S***N on September 8, 2020* By absolute far the best restoration paint on the market today. Goes on easily and quickly with the least amount of mess for a not so thick paint. Roller or brush and it's a piece of cake to apply. We bought an old farmhouse from 1875 and the people who had owned it prior to us rented it out and NEVER took care of it after tenants moved out. It reeked of cat, dog and human waste like you cannot even imagine. It literally sucked the air out of your lungs it was that bad. One room was full of human waste because the owner hadn't fixed the toilet and the tenants used that room as their toilet I guess. The heating system is obviously very old in this house too which added to smell with the burnt urine. We literally applied one coat of RESTORATION ( Do not waste your money on the other KILZ if it's really bad, buy this one ) and the smell is gone. We put it on the floor, walls window frames and everywhere else to get rid of the smell. 3 gallons and we had 4 bedrooms, 2 landings, one bathroom, 1 kitchen and one living room painted. With 2 coats. It even goes over the top of varnish with minimal seeping through. Top coat goes on easily. House looks brand new now. Glad that's over. Oh and one more thing. For a paint that hides disgusting smells the paint really had no lingering smell to offend you or irritate sensitive noses like I have.
