Each Skylander's Starter Pack comes with a new Portal of Power. These Portals of Power are backwards compatible with previous Skylanders games, but only the original is forwards compatible. Yes. If my memory is correct, I think the only online aspect of this game is comparison of scores with your friends. But I could be thinking of Skylanders Giants and/or Swap Force.

We want to get this for our 6 year old for Christmas, which other characters would you recommend purchasing to go with it?

Skylanders games are designed to be able to be played with whatever character you have. However, the game has areas and items that can only be unlocked by Skylanders of a certain element, so to be able to get to every area you will need at least one of each element. That makes the game replayable once you get new characters. Skylanders Spyro's Adventure starts you out with 3 elements: Spyro-Magic, Trigger Happy-Tech, and Gill Grunt-Water. Who you decide to get is really up to personal preference, but in addition to this set you will still need one each for Fire, Earth, Air, Life, and Undead. I also recommend ones who can fly, because in some areas it is highly useful. Fire- Sunburn or Flameslinger. Earth - Dino-Rang is fun. Air - Lightning Rod (all of the Air ones are fun)Life - Stealth Elf or CamoUndead - Cynder or Hex
