It establishes a world that feels appropriately serious given the political subject matter, but it's not above its source material, either. It is a movie in which a frog man devours a bird with his cartoon tongue, after all. It's this magic trick of tone that gives the movie its staying power, and it's a tone that today's Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to make use of. Something that those films don't do as well, however, is the human drama. X-Men nails this as well thanks to director Bryan Singer. He brings the character-driven focus of an indie film to what would otherwise be a goofy sci-fi flick.With the hindsight of all the superhero films that have followed in the decades since, this is, dare I say it, an important film. It showed the way for all those huddled super-powered masses yearning to breathe free. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ How will mutants respond to the hatred of humans? *by J***G on Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2020* The original X-Men movie was about fear of the other. Mutants were just becoming public knowledge in America and that led to fear and politicians to push the Mutant Registration Act that would make all mutants to sign up with the government to be controlled. The reaction to that took two forms. One was the X-Men led by Charles Xavier that wanted to protect mutants and help mankind at the same time and the other led by Magneto who wanted to fight humanity to protect mutants. This split actually harkens back to the origins of the X-Men with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Originally the comic was about equal rights for African Americans with the mutants representing that group. Charles Xavier was Martin Luther King Jr and Magneto was Malcolm X. Magneto even says he will fight for mutant rights “By any means necessary” which was a famous phrase that Malcolm X used.The first part of the movie lays out all the mutant characters. Although the X-Men was the title, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) was obviously the lead since he was always the favorite character in the comics. Then there’s Magneto’s plan and of course the big confrontation at the end.The movie does a good job balancing out the characters, the story and the action. This made it a very good introduction to what would become a very successful franchise.C ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bluray+Digital (that's what it says and that's what you get) *by S***R on Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2016* For some reason, a few people have rated these new copies of the XMEN movies with 1 star because they think that it supposedly says on the back cover that it's a two disc edition but when opened, it's only one disc. THIS IS FALSE. The new slipcovers and the case itself say bluray+digital. I read both the slipcover and the case artwork (even the fine print) and nowhere does it say it's two discs. Digital copies are exactly that. Digital, not physical. You do get two copies of the movie but not on two discs. First copy is a physical disc, second copy is a code to redeem the movie for free on VUDU.com. I'm not sure why this is so complicated for some to understand.For the movie itself, five stars ALL THE WAY for the superhero movie that started it all!
