Just do NOT install the software that comes with; find an alternate source if you need ODIS yourself.....The in-depth explanation is that genuine VAS5054A and VAS6154A units cost over $1100 USD. Fortunately, various clones have been manufactured by copying the PCB, microcontrollers, and firmware. These clones range from ~$50 to $150+ depending on the quality of components used. VW has seemingly turned a blind eye to them as both ODIS and erWin require a (much more profitable) subscription.The best clone (1:1 for those familiar with reps) will have: all green PCBs, an OKI M6636 (SAE-J1850 controller), a NXP TJA1054 (CAN transceiver), an Infineon SAK-XC167CI (microcontroller), an AMB2300 Bluetooth module, and Samsung K6-series SRAM. All components are genuine and identical to that of a real 5054A.A top-tier clone will have: all green PCBs, an OKI M6636, a TJA1054, an AMB2300, an Infineon SAK-X16-series microcontroller, and Samsung RAM. Basically a few components (mainly the memory and microcontroller) are swapped with pin-compatible versions from the same manufacturer and family of products, thus having no effect on performance.A middle-tier clone, such as this one, will have the same components as a top-tier EXCEPT for the Bluetooth module. It will be swapped for a seemingly pin-compatible but cheaper module by a different manufacturer. My unit contained a BC417 on a blue PCB. The reason that this (albeit unfortunate) change WILL in-fact work for most users, myself included, is that most programming is done over USB which is much faster and more stable. Only if you have a specific reason to use Bluetooth with ODIS, would I then firmly advise against buying this unit.A bottom-tier clone will have all blue or white PCBs, with barely any original or genuine components. The firmware is made to trick ODIS into thinking it's a 5054A. This approach may or may not work depending on many factors.Ultimately, I would advise against these units as it's purely a gamble.As stated, DO NOT INSTALL THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH ANY OF THESE 5054A CLONES! As pictured, my clone came with four simple DVD-R's labeled "1", "2", "3", and "4". Curious, I booted up a sandbox and extracted the 21-part .rar file across the four discs to find .txt instructions and some .exe files. Basically to "install" ODIS 5.1.3, you run the setup.exe, then the patch.exe to modify the boot shortcut, and finally the keygen.exe to "license" it. The problem is, the latter two .exe files also tried to install EIGHT various trojans and viruses. Not keygen-related false alarms either (e.g., Photoshop cracks), but real defined malware like Zegost and Sality. Nonetheless, because it was sandboxed, I let it install only to find it NOT work at all with Windows 10. Seems, all these cracked ODIS images rely on Windows 7.The good news is, most third-party activation services don't need you to install the software or drivers for your 5054A. They will send you a VMware image to boot that directly links your unit to their machine with a legitimate licensed subscription to ODIS and FAZIT. You of course also have the option to subscribe to ODIS yourself, or acquire it from various forums that thoroughly vet their bootlegged software to be clean and functional.I give this unit three stars: Minus one for it only being a middle-tier clone for the price. And minus one for the inclusion of true malware. For most users that are shopping for one of these on Amazon (versus AliExpress or eBay): this unit does in-fact work, and it arrives FAST via Prime.
