Then a friend said theirs doesn't do that, so I ordered another one and it sprayed nicely. So, if it just squirts, send it back and try another one! Because it really does work on thin hair areas and on gray that's growing out. Cover your sink area, put a towel around your shoulders, and shove your bathroom rug out of the way of possible wayward bits of color. This stuff stays on, and that includes anything you accidentally spray. I got medium brown, and it's a bit darker than I thought it would be, but I can deal with that. It will come off on your fingers if you rub it, but I haven't had it come off on pillows, etc. It makes your hair kind of matted feeling. But it's worth it to me. It looks perfectly natural and it stays in until you wash it out.
