I do not think that there is any chemotaxis/chemical that so called attracts them to the black box. If you have a roach problem, get a tube of Harris roach gel and put very small amounts in places no pets can get to. The stuff works wonders when used properly. The secret to using it effectively is to put no more than 1/4" in any one place, and in several places. Combat max is another very good one and actually works just as well as the Harris. Just remember to use it in places it cannot be accessed by any pets, and replace it as directed. I had someone staying with me for a while who brought roaches in my house, and those products got rid of them rather quickly.
