The putty makes it excellent. - First off: I was worried about buying an item that wasn’t eligible for Prime shipping but it arrived 4 days after I ordered it which was way better than I expected. My car survival kit has most of the things I need in it but I was missing a fire starter. I’ve got a lighters and some matches but lighters get borrowed and sometimes just don’t work and matches have a 20% success rate, if that. I live in the city so I didn’t have a chance to test it until the 4th of July weekend when it’s completely acceptable to have smoke coming out of your back yard. It’s been a few years since scout camp so I made sure I had the instructions available, got a small clump of dried grass, and the blue can of pyro putty. I made a ball about the size of a marble and stretched it out like the instructions said on the grass. After failing to create a spark a couple times I used the instructions and got a spark. I tucked it into the grass under the putty and struck a good spark and it lit right up. The marble sized ball of putty burned for 2 - 3 minutes and lit all of the grass I put in it on fire. The flame was about 6” high for a good minute. I’m pretty confident I could start a roaring fire in a survival situation. Hopefully I never have to find out. Side note about the putty: I expected it to smell like chemicals and I was pleasantly surprised when it smelled like pine tar soap. You can see that can in the photo where I have the ferrous rod in my hand. I bought this kit because I thought it was a really good deal. It comes with two 0.5oz cans of Pyro Putty, a striker, the ferrous rod and the cool little nylon bag. Have to tell you I was surprised when I got the kit, which is the reason that I added the photos to this review. The ferrous rod is HUGE. I was expecting something the size of a ballpoint pen, but as you can see it is much bigger than a ballpoint pen. I am not really impressed with the striker, but that is okay. I will most likely use the rib edge of my knife as a striker.
