The Corsair II was later adopted by the U.S. Air Force, including the National Air Guard, to replace the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, the North American F-100 Super Sabre and the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. The aircraft was also exported to Greece in the 1970s, and Portugal and Thailand in the late 1980s. The design of the A-7 airframe was based on the supersonic success Vought F-8 Crusader.
