But it slices like a charm and so worth the price to a home chef or baker who loves a good sandwich. Being heavy it doesn't slide around when using. Pretty enough to leave out all the time. I love this appliance. So far it has handled bacon, bread, cheese, ham, and turkey with no problems. I even stuck in a tomato and found the sweet spot here is going with thicker slices. I justify the cost by skipping the expensive deli counter at the grocery store. I buy hunks of cheese and slice my own. Cooked meats cut like butter and there is nothing like a stack of super thin steak slices between two slices of homemade bread. There are cheaper slicers out there but too cheap and you a looking at rust and cracked plastic in no time. Some machines in this price range may perform just as well but my Berkel is just so darn attractive in red. Solidly built of metal, aluminum and a few small plastic parts, it screams quality. I'm sure it will outlive me. The only thing I can complain about is the additional cost of the blade remover which is not included. Super quiet. It's also pricey. I pulled the trigger on a black Friday deal. As far as slicers go, if the price isn't prohibitive, I would go for it. A visitor stopped by as I was using it and said "I'm buying that".
