## Description

This tool is used for plotting and reading UTM, MGRS, or USNG grid coordinates from topographic maps.It is an improved version of the Graphic Training Aid 5-2-12 Coordinate Scale and Protractor used by United States and NATO military forces around the world. This coordinate scale offers significant benefits over the standard issue GTA 5-2-12. - By using a slot on one side of the tool for access to the map, the tool can be more compact than the traditional GTA tool. - The tool features several additional map scales, including 1:24,000, which is the most common topographic map scale found within the United States. - The 1:100,000 scale now spans 5km grid lines, making it much more usable. - The overall dimensions of the tool have been reduced so that it is the size of a music CD, easily fitting into a pocket or any slot where you could store a CD. - Rounded corners keep it from wearing holes in your pockets. - The inner protractor is marked in degrees and the outer protractor is in mils. - Bands of white ink are printed under the two compass roses to make reading the compass rose easier and to keep the tool from "disappearing" when you place it on the map.The tool is printed on 30 mil plastic stock with a protective coating. It is about the thickness and stiffness of a credit card. It's 33% thicker than the standard military issue version, so it's less likely to be bent or broken when you need to use it. See the photo of the tool bent almost in half with no issues. Scales x Grid Size: 1:24,000 x 1km 1:25,000 x 1km/1:250,000 x 10km 1:50,000 x 2km/1:500,000 x 20km 1:10,000 x 500m/1:100,000 x 5km (Size 4.5" x 4.5")

Review: Epic Value! - I needed a protector to read USGS 1/24,000 maps. There were cheaper versions available and I had no experience with Maptools.com but I have extensive experience with paper thin plastic protractors that are cut poorly/inaccurate, bend, crack, break and scratch easily. The reviews said this company does not do cheap. The reviews were correct. Great protractor that lets me read not only 1/24,000 but 4 more scales and you get a protractor that reads degrees and mils. If that's all you got this would be a great deal but I wouldn't feel compelled to write a review. You also get a host of other material that explains how to use the protractor on various types of maps, access to a website with tutorials and a personalized declination reference card (printed on waterproof paper) based on your mailing address. All this is written and presented in a positive manner that makes you feel like these people take pride in their product and want you to enjoy the map/exploring experience with them. Highly recommend and will purchase from again without hesitation.
Review: Extremely well made - Would have ordered direct but saw it was on here and added to another order to get free shipping, package arrived and it's a thick manila envelope with not only the protractor but also a whole bunch of well made and useful navigational educational materials for people who may have had this recommended and just be getting started. It's great because you can use the additional resources as a place to fill in gaps in your own knowledge or check the advice given by the person who recommended the product who may have learned how to use it under less than ideal conditions or simply eaten too many crayons for breakfast and be misremembering some of their nav training. Got way more value than I expected, super happy.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Beginner here! Pls recommend right kind of maps (brand & where to get them) for FL, GA & NC to use w/this protractor & a compass**
A: Thanks for your question! The USGS Map Store is a great place to find topographic maps for this area. You will probably also find the MapTools website helpful--it has a number of great tutorials.

**Q: I'm planning a trip to yellowstone and my maps are at 1:63360 scale, am I right that this won't work properly?**
A: You are correct. This tool does not have a 1:63,360 scale on it. We do have several tools that do have that scale: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003CIFHHS, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003CIA2ZU, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005F13HUY, and http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005GR0XCW.

**Q: Do they have one with 1/70,000 scale**
A: We do not have a stock tool for 1:70,000 scale maps. Contact us about making custom tools for any scale.

**Q: How thick is the plastic?**
A: The tool is about 0.030" thick. The material is not brittle, but rather stiff and flexible. It is very similar to the thickness and flexibility of a credit card.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great quality and service
*by E***T on August 25, 2024*

Roamer scale is clear, of thick, durable material, and of highest quality. The seller also supplied with purchase a small dossier with various sheets and cards of map reading hints, tips, exercises and a quiz to see how well you absorbed the material. A compass, after all, is only as good as your skills in using it. I would definitely buy from this seller again. Top notch.
