I enjoy art and sculpture, and over the last few years I've really been digging into physical sculpture in particular, and with it, I've been trying a lot of new tools and materials along the way. For years I used to use an electric meat-grinder and pasta roller in order to mix my "perfect" clay (which was a blend of Super Sculpey, Sculpey Firm, and a little Sculpey III), so when Sculpey Medium Blend was announced awhile back, I was interested in checking it out and comparing and contrasting it to clays and blends I already used. I must say: I've been exceptionally pleased and surprised with the results! I think the best way I could describe Sculpey Medium Blend is that it is about the grey color of Sculpey Firm, but with a consistency between Sculpey Firm and Super Sculpey. I love working in a neutral grey clay because it really helps details pop, and in reverse: it makes you aware of rough areas or areas with fingerprints you might want to smooth out. This clay smooths just the same as other polymer clays I've used (with Turpenoid or rubbing alcohol), and it's really quite pleasant to work with! While I'm sure there will be times I will want to crack open my meat grinder and pasta roller once again to mix clays, I can honestly tell you that since I've started using Sculpey Medium Blend, I've all-but stuck to it. It's just that good, and it's contributed to all of my sculptures that you see in the photos below. I am considering getting into sculpting and I don't know how fast I would be able to finish a sculpture.** A: I'm very slow at sculpting and I've had a sculpture sit out for a few months without drying out. It gets a little stiff if left out, but nothing a little working with hands doesn't fix. I would recommend a box for spare clay and a cover while you work to keep dust off. It's been fine until I baked it. I do 225 for 3 hours, 170 for three hours, then turn off and let the oven cool naturally. It minimizes cracks on large sculptures as well as small **Q: Firm/medium less likely to break on thin small parts like ears/hair/ropes/claws for an 7in figure?** A: I have had no problems with medium for small parts. But the thinner you make a piece I've found could break if you baked it and still need to work on the piece. But I need really thin dress draping so I still needed to handle figure as I baked pieces. But found that super glue gel fixed any broken pieces perfect and once painted you couldn't tell. But if you are not going to paint the piece you may still see a little Crack were you re glued. **Q: What tools do I need to begin with** A: I bought the "Darice 11-Piece Clay Cleaning Tool Set" when starting out and have found it to be pretty versatile and useful for sculpting. Later on I bought a set of ribbon clay tools for scraping clay off and making textures, which has also been really nice to have because the set came with several different shapes and sizes. My next planned purchases will be some rubber tip tools for making softer line details and metal ball tools for making eye socket holes. Depending on what you're planning on making, I think that should be a pretty solid set! **Q: I just received my super sculey medium. and i am a little surprised by how crumbly it is. is this normal?** A: No I don’t think it should be crumbly or dry. But my son used this gray and I thought I would try it because he loved it. It is absolutely phenomenal. It is very easy to use and it does not dry out. It is very moldable and very durable. It bakes very well and does not burn as long as you use the right temperature. I have even painted over it in areas where I needed to. I used the medium rather than the firm and I loved it. I will now be using this a lot more than the beige color. I highly recommend it to anyone who uses polymer clay.
