Awesome CD that I first heard in high school a couple decades ago
It's only four songs but brings back memories of a good trip. I had to buy this cause I couldn't find the first one that I bought many moons ago. There was a problem trying to rip this to my computer though. I don't know why. Encoding maybe? Other CDs I've bought recently ripped fine. So, I'm not sure what the problem is. Great little album though. I love the visual artwork, as well.

A correction to the "correction"
Correction (to a couple of the reviewers who previously posted): The band MUDHONEY created grunge music. Soundgarden came into existence very soon after Mudhoney started. Mother Love Bone and Smashing Pumpkins have a few grunge-like songs, but I wouldn't classify them as grunge. This EP (which is just a "single" with 3 bonus tracks) is good, but all of this music has been re-released on updated album reissues. But I remember hearing this one in the early Nineties, back when the music industry meant something.

The "Rhinoceros" single, sort of.
Smashing Pumpkins came into the scene with Gish after two other indie-label singles, which was excellent in spite the unfortunate fact that the songs are more same-y than in later records. This single was intended to be the "Rhinoceros" single but the band did not know it was going to be released as an EP."Rhinoceros" is played similar to the album except this one's like 30 seconds shorter, taking out the atmospheric outro. Wonderful song if there is one. Let's move on."Blue" is pretty subpar, a track better off left from Gish. It sounds just like most of the heavy stuff but unlike those songs hooks don't sink and shine through in repeated listens. "Slunk," on the other hand is nice rockin' from the Pumpkins. If you like heavy and grungy Pumpkins, this one is a real treat. In fact, it is possibly the reason to own this EP if you're interested.Well, "Bye June" is kind of interesting too, one of the band's earliest recordings. It was only a demo and kind of has an incomplete feel.So half of this stuff was not on album or Pisces Iscariot which makes it okay to look through.

Calm before the storm
This is kind of a nostalgic little EP for us Generation Xers. It's Gish -era material and B-sides that would do any Pumpkins fan proud. After "Lull," the Smashing Pumpkins upped the ante and ran away with their success, making these simple songs that much more of a treasure. Gish's "Rhinocerous" mixes a dreamy start to buzzsaw guitars that later take over, almost nullifying the heartfelt but sappy lyrics. The short "Blue" starts with quiet wind chimes and a belching bass, which gives way to thumping drums, quiet interludes and a bizarre bridge that peters out. "Blue" foreshadows some of the future pop the Pumpkins would delve into, whereas "Slunk" contains wild guitars and snotty lyrics, properly leading off this era of music, stuff that rivaled even Nirvana's. Finally, "Bye June" is as tender as "Slunk" is rambunctious. The song features spacey lyrics and an acoustic guitar, nothing more. It's pure magic from a band just beginning to tap into its abandonment and potential. Unfortunately, because of its length, "Lull" is nothing spectacular. The songs are good, a few borderline great, but my understanding is that this band had many more great unreleased tunes from 1989. Now that's scary.

Smashing Pumpkins - Lull
I bought this single quite some time ago on cassette and have been looking for it on CD for a LONG time now. I finally bought it a few weeks ago from Amazon and I'm completely satisfied. There are four songs total on this single and they're all worth it. You're really only looking at two new songs, "Slunk" and "Blue." You can find an alternate version of Slunk on either the "Viewphoria" VHS or DVD, or,the "Earphoria" CD. That however is a live version, this one is of demo quality but definitely a studio version. As for "Blue," it's definitely a demo, but, still worthwhile. All in all, if you're a huge Pumpkin's fan and you must have everything, this is worth your time, if you're just curious about the band, I would start with their major releases and go from there. In my opinion however, even though it's the same studio version as on Gish, Rhinoceros makes this album a good choice.

Decent EP For Fans
This is certainly not for people not used to the Smashing Pumpkins (and to Corgan's voice in particular), but if you have "Gish," this is certainly worth having. As you are well aware, "Rhinocerous" is one of the band's best songs, combining blissfully-slow New Wave with sizzling heavy-psychedelia to create an aural fantasia that also makes a killer single. "Blue" should have been included on the album. No excuse for that. The other two aren't quite as good. "Slunk" uses a Pumpkins-formula riff and has hideous sounding lead guitar (listen to the sample to see what I mean) and "Bye June" is more of a lightweight acoustic rumination from 1989 than a real song of the quality Corgan was crafting by '91. So, what I'm saying is, don't buy this expecting a masterpiece. Expect a decent EP, cause that's all it is.
