I have disliked virtually every family therapy school I've come across. It's either about having the perfect behavioral intervention or confronting familial roles. This book was a eureka moment for me, after several years of AEDP, EFT, IFS work, yielding great changes with individual clients, but feeling completely incompetent during any family sessions, I now realize that I can work with a family with the same interventions that I use for individual work.The cons are that if you have read significant amounts of the literature on intersubjectivity, attachment theory, affective neuroscience, trauma theory and the like, the theory all ends up sounding the same. As if you can just juxtapose random statements from the above sciences and throw them together randomly. This improved greatly throughout the book.The other thing I would've liked to see, was more compare and contrast to other family therapies and some discussion about how this work in particular changes the family system. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Clinical Resource on Family Intervention *by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2009* Increasingly, there is a trend away from individual approaches to child therapy to focus more on the family. This is especially true in the treatment of children with disrupted attachment patterns, as is common with foster and adopted kids, for example. Drawing upon theory, clinical experience, and case examples, Hughes emphasizes that intervention with families should be playful, curious, and empathic. Hughes also emphasizes the importance of the therapist 'resonating' with what is happening in the treatment.Many of the concepts and approaches discussed in this book are familiar to those of us who work with foster and adopted children and their families. If you are new to these concepts, this book will broaden your understanding, but it requires a shift in mindset and approach from that of typical child psychology. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well-written, and USEFUL for the therapist *by R***W on Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2008* I attended a training by Dan Hughes years ago and was very inspired and impressed. This book gives the therapist the real 'flavor' of Hughes' work with attachment disordered children and their families. Humor, empathy, and "finding the words" for the child are used in a way that keeps the focus on the child-mother connection. Many others talk about keeping the focus on that connection...Hughes shows you how to do it.
