It feels like very, very, strong styrofoam. That's why it's so lightweight, which is good, but I worry about it getting damaged easily. So far it has been fine, weighed down by soil and a plant. There are cool plugs inside at the bottom, so you can remove them to have drainage holes or keep them in to stop drainage. I like this level of control. When I found it on Amazon, I decided to order it because it looked so real; that is because they use a real log for the mold. I was totally happy when I received the planter.
