You can use a wider piece, but if you get more than about 3 inches, I would use a different hinge. These hinges work great, but I had to soak them in 3-1 oil and repeat opening and shutting them to get them to work. Now, they work good, but you have to remember that they will open by simply pulling them open, but to close, you must first press the lever down before it will unlock.
