CHEMEX FILTERS Are critical to a GREAT mug of coffee
I just got my FIRST CHEMEX 8 cup carafe and these filters. I see a noticeable difference from other filters I have used in the past for drip or mechanical coffee makers. I BELIEVE THE FILTERS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT piece of this coffee puzzle! I got the circle unbleached filters as the CHEMEX carafe is a circular drip maker. Seemed easiest to use. I have bleached CHEMEX circle filters on order to see if there is a taste difference I can discern. USE THESE FILTERS in whatever coffee maker you have...a mug, a drip, a mechanical drip...use CHEMEX FILTERS! The CHEMEX filters are much thicker than doubling up other brands of filters....So there must be more than thickness of material involved in a GREAT CUP of COFFEE. I'll, eventually, try the square CHEMEX as well as the bleached CHEMEX filters...just ....because.... HeEre's my review of the CHEMEX 8 cup CARAFE "I received my CHEMEX COFFEE CARAFE, CHEMEX FILTERS (unbleached in circle shape) and terrific roasted beans....Where's the grinder...YIKES! no grinder! It's elsewhere...WHAT TO DO till I get my grinder in hand...Well I went to the supermarket and picked up a LARGE/huge can of inexpensive coffee. CHASE and SANBORN.... I had to make something in the new pot....right???? This was the finest cup of joe. It tasted so fine with a bit of sugar. No fines or bitterness in the mug. I used the "DOT" (raised bump) on the carafe to make 24 ounce of splendid coffee. I measured out 5 cups of coffee for a 4 cup pot. I believe the filter is ALL IMPORTANT! The carafe is easy to handle. I fill the carafe with cold tap water (to the dot which is ~ 24 ounce) dot is a measurement indicator on the carafe. Putting the cold water from carafe, I put on an electric (short spout)CUISINART kettle to boil I pour HOT tap water, into the carafe ~145 degF to pre-warm I pour hot tap water into my 24 ounce OXO thermos cup to pre-warm I put the CHEMEX filter in the top of carafe I put 5 cups, measured, of coffee into the filter When water is boiled I pour kettle water onto grounds to cover the grounds I wait for the water to completely drain; thus allowing the grinds to "BLOOM" After water is through the grinds and the bubbles stop (within seconds) I continue to pour the remainder of the boiled water on the grounds...SLOWLY... After kettle is EMPTY AND ALL THE WATER IS THROUGH THE GROUNDS Remove the grounds filled filter and fill the pre-warmed OXO thermos mug with coffee A bit of sugar and the nicest cup o joe is waiting for me! NO OIL SHEEN, NO BITTERNESS Easily replicated coffee each time. To clean... I swirl HOT water in the carafe and put it aside till the morrow. DAMN! I LOVE this drip maker... I got the 8 cup carafe I am awaiting my CAPRESSO grinder to show up at my door I really don't need it though....SURPRISE!!!! to me "

Buy These Filters - They Work
These filters are simply great! They allow the water to flow at a rate that is proper for the flavor transfer from the grinds. The filter also keeps the grinds from going into the carafe - you shouldn’t have to “eat your coffee, right!

Great Filters! Box of 100 can last for Years!
These coffee filters are top notch, and there's a hidden bonus that I'll tell you about. First, my process: 1) Use ceramic burr grinder to grind beans into a fine grind, about the consistency of powdered sugar. 2) Add grinds to filter (in a chemex decanter, obviously) and then pour just enough boiling water on the grinds to soak them. This is recommended by chemex as well if you read the insert they give you. 3) After about 30-60 sec I just pure water in until the level is about 2/3 up the edge of the decanter and let it brew. Works great. So using this method, and after having tried various coarser grind settings, this has proven to work the best with all different types of coffee beans. I have also tried using the metal chemex filters here and they are total junk. They clog if you use anything other than coarse grinds, but the coarse grinds don't let you get the best flavor. Now here is the tip. These chemex paper filters are REUSABLE. Yes, here's how: 1) Right after you finish brewing coffee just rinse away the grinds gently under the tap. 2) Don't crumple the filter or try to wring it dry. After you rinse it, and it's still wet, fold it back into its original shape as best you can and let it dry in your dish rack. 3) One filter will easily last 10 brews or more. Flavor will not be compromised. When you notice the fibers of the filter start to get stringy and fuzzy, that's when you swap over to a fresh one. There is no reason to brew once and then throw away the filter. It is VERY HIGH QUALITY PAPER and in my opinion, using it multiple times actually improves the flavor. I've gotten over 20 brews from one filter and on the 20th time the chemex still did a better job than one of those cheapo paper filters they sell in most supermarkets.

Buy directly from Chemex
Either overpay for each set of filters or buy 7 boxes from Chemex. The only reason these are expensive everywhere is because of Chemex’s cheesy shipping policy. I had to buy 7 boxes, which is 700 filters, to get free shipping. The cost is justifiable since I plan on using all 700. The filters are made in USA, so they are high quality and far superior to any inferior imported filters. They filter coffee superbly. Easy to use. Easy to clean. You can stuff about 150g+ of coffee grounds in a filter before it’s too much to pour over. Well made design since it’s American engineered. Don’t buy cheap junko imported microplastic laden filters. These are the perfect size for a regular Chemex.

Excellent coffee and a free "brain puzzle" for free!
I love Chemex products. I have had 2 pots over the years. They always make a fantastic cup of "melitta-style" drip coffee that to me , has better overall flavor. I wonder if it might not be the chemistry-grade glass? Something Walter White might have used in Breaking Bad to start his breakfast. The filters are a bit of a Chinese paper puzzle until you become used to them. The only filters I buy are these Chemex bonded Filters/Square. Hey, doesn't everyone need a good Chemex Bonded Square Filter in the morning to get the brain in gear?

Using it for the Krups Moka Brew
I don't have a Chemex brewer, but I do use a Krups Moka Brew. The filters for the Krups are expensive and difficult to find, so I tested these Chemex filters to see how they would perform. A square Chemex filter is 12" x 12", which means that I can cut out 9 Krups-sized filters out of each one. A box of 100 Krups filters costs 7 to 10 bucks. For about the same price, I get 900 from the Chemex. The Chemex filters are also thicker than the Krups filters - I'd say about 20%. I've been using the Krups Moka Brew for several years and love the coffee it makes (and you can even do an abbreviated brew to make something that resembles espresso). I ran several back-to-back brews comparing the performance of the Krups filter vs. the Chemex filter on my Moka Brew. I used 20 grams of the same home roasted coffee with 500mL of water for each brew, and a Capresso Infinity grinder. Skip to the conclusion if you just want the results. A) Krups filter. I used only one filter and tamped down with a moderate amount of force. The beans were ground on the finest "fine" setting (#5). This is how I usually do it on the Moka brew. From the time the water hits the coffee, it took 3m50s for the brewing to complete. Initially there was the characteristic delicious looking thick drip with the dense crema - it looks close to espresso, with a bit of the mouse tailing (sometimes I stop the brew at about 30 seconds and just drink that. It's close to espresso and very delicious). The complete brew had a lot of body with robust flavor, like a great americano. B) One Chemex filter. I ground the beans and tamped them like with the Krups filter. I was shocked to see how fast the water came through. It was a waterfall compared to the rich stream from the Krups filter. The brewing time was only 2m20s. There was none of that rich dense crema at the initial stages and the resulting coffee tasted more like a drip brew. It had thinner body vs the Krups filter, and the flavor was cleaner. It's still a decent cup of coffee, but I was surprised at the amount of difference the filter made. C) Two Chemex filters. I decided to use two filters, one on top and one on the bottom. I also changed the grind setting to 3 notches finer (#2). I tamped it pretty hard. The brewtime for this was comparable to using one Krups filter - 3m45s. However, the brew still looked different vs the Krups. While it was no longer the waterfall that it was with just one Chemex filter, and the drip rate was similar to that of the Krups filter, the characteristics were still very different. Mainly, it still lacked that rich looking initial brew stage that you get with the Krups filter. The body was thicker vs using one filter, but still slightly thinner than with the Krups filter. Conclusion: The Krups filter makes a huge difference versus using the Chemex filter. Despite being thicker, the Chemex filter results in a faster brew with less body and a cleaner cup profile. The Chemex results are still good, but closer to a normal drip brew, rather than a moka/americano quality one gets with a Krups filter. I recommend using a finer grind with the Chemex filter, and using two (or more?) filters - at least when brewing less than a full pot. The Chemex filters will still be cheaper since they're roughly 1/7 the price of a Krups filter. I can't say that one result is better than the other - it's a matter of preference. I prefer a fuller body (and an occasional "espresso" from the Moka brew), so I'll still get the Krups filters despite the high price. However, the Chemex filter is an option when the Krups filters are unavailable (as often happens). The Chemex might also result in better coffee for beans that are brighter and lightly roasted - worth testing.

Bonded is the way to go
I ordered these Bonded filters recently, and have been thoroughly impressed with the quality of them. I'm used to using the brown square filters from Chemex, but these seem to be even better in my opinion. I like the natural white color, and knowing that they aren't chemically treated. My coffee tastes great, and they are so easy so setup and throw away. Will be ordering these into the future for all my coffee needs!

Good for my single cup of morning coffee
Purchased this as an addition to my morning coffee routine and it was a good choice. I would also like to mention that the customer service from Jewel coffee is amazing. They spotted that I ordered the wrong filter size and have it corrected before shipping. Thank you.
