Its not a hard clasp clip mount but rather tabs you bend back around the trim piece which is still pretty solid and less chance of damaging the leatherette trim piece. A couple of things to note, The surface is not flat facing out ward. It is flat but the height of the sides which make contact with the trim piece are different. The result is the mounting face is tilted to face the driver which is ok when installing things that require only one base such as a phone mount.
