The outer pocket is perfect for stashing a jacked or pair of shoes, and the small upper pocket was great for passport/wallet/chapstick--things I needed at moments notice. I chose this pack specifically b/c there are only two large pockets (I tend to forget where I've stuffed things) and it kept me really organized and was comfortable enough to wear around all day without feeling bogged down. When I thought about upgrading, top priorities were storage volume, types of pockets, and padding/comfort.Volume is the one area this pack comes up a tad short, in my opinion. My ideal bag would have enough space to hold 2-3 days worth of clothes + smaller items. With this one, I can carry a pair of jeans + 1 shirt and smaller items OR 2 shirts in the main compartment. I do not consider this a flaw because it is what it is, and for its construction and other aspects, the bag is excellent.Pockets... they're everywhere! You have pockets to hold most any common item you want. I like the interior padded pocket - designed for a laptop or tablet, but it can be employed to hide and protect anything thin. Zippers are big and sturdy.Comfort was clearly a top consideration when NF designers made this one - a benefit of so many years experience. The straps and back breathe well, and the inclusion of the hip support may come in handy if using this for a day hike.One characteristic I was feeling uncertain about when I ordered was the color. I liked the red, but wished it was a deeper hue.
