Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Project Workbook (Understanding GIS, 2)

I’m just getting into GIS and bought a few resources. This book is fantastic. It covers the basics of working with ArcGIS and the exercises so far have all worked step by step. There are even supporting videos for the text that were very helpful. It is a project book, which gives you hands-on knowledge of the software. This book is easy to folllow and would be a good book to support a college course. Since it is a project book it is built around one project, which is pretty extensive for a beginner book. The one thing it doesn’t have is in-depth knowledge which is why it would be good to have another text to support the book or an instructor to supplement the information. All in all a great book.

I bought this for an ArcGIS course and the book came exactly how it was described and was the cheapest too!

The only ArcGIS book and software worth investing in. The Tutorials 1-2 are junk. They didn't even test their books. This book has been tested and will let you know if GIS is something for you or not. You will not learn the background theory but given a good mind the lessons will be quite rewarding.

The last chapter throws you under the bus because they do not include it for some reason.

This is a great tutorial book, if you are studying GIS--and especially if you're using ESRI software. It's essential. One of the few books I won't sell back. It's a keeper... 'til the next version.

It isn't that I didn't like this book, but I had a lot of issues in my class by purchasing this on amazon rather than the college bookstore. The code they sent me was for the older version which was not Windows 10 compatible. It worked mostly, but there were tasks required in the text that would crash the program I was using. The ONLY reason I was able to complete the course was because Earsi was offering a free 6 week trial of their latest software online. The text book was great, but if you get the code for the older software beware.
