It is woven not a solid fabric. These are beautiful though and you can easily take them to the sink and shake the crumbs off. They wipe off nicely too **Q: Are these thick enough to be used as a trivet/hotpad?** A: I definitely would not use them as a hotpad on fine furniture - maybe on a hard surface such as quartz or stone. **Q: can these be used under an electric coffee maker** A: Dear customer, this placemat is made of natural rattan, so the placemat cannot be wet for a long time, if there is water on the placemats, you need wipe it with damp cloth and dry it in ventilated place. **Q: Do these placemats "shed" as in leave underneath of it tiny bits of the placemats (so you have to clean underneath them every time?)?** A: I don’t see that happening with the ones that I bought.
