Fabric and Leather Proof Waterproofing

Before I tell you about Nikwax, please note that I also use Scotchgard from 3M. If you use a solvent based water proofing spray (think 3M), be prepared for strong odors and solvents. 3M waterproofing is great for nubuck and suede as it doesn't darken fabric or natural hide. The down side is that it does require an aerosol can that contains a rapidly evaporating solvent. It dries quickly and should be applied outdoors. Nikwax is water based and has no solvent. It does not smell good and sprays onto fabric and leather with a milky white consistency. No solvents and safe to use indoors. Nikwax takes a while to dry - but in the end, it is excellent for maintaining water repellency. It is extremely effective and keeps fabric and leather cleaner for longer duration. It does tend to darken leather and fabric more than the aerosol (3M) stain repellants. I would not recommend Nikwax for use on suede or on nubuck as it will change the texture if you use too much. Breathability is maintained. For smooth leather and fabric it does seem to work as long as you know that the darkened color change is a strong possibility.

I used this product on my water resistant hiking shoes that had become considerably less water resistant. After application, they were restored to their original level of water resistance as far as I can tell. I hike a lot in the woods and tall grass with my dog, sometimes after heavy rains. My socks were getting wet after hikes on wet days. Now they don’t get wet.

Used on athletic shoes. After applying and allowing to fully dry I walked through some heavy dew in grass and water seemed to bead up and my feet did not get wet. As far as how durable it is or how often you need to reapply remains to be seen. I would suggest if you are getting the shoes wet on a regular basis I would tend to reapply often.

Great product! I use this on my sneakers and on my leather shoes for water repellents and they work great. I applied two coats to my Nike sneakers and two coats to my Beckett Simon and shoes and the water just beads off does not discolor the leather and does not discolor the sneakers. Great product and there's plenty enough to spray at least four or five more pairs

Nikwax fabric and leather water proofing is so easy to use, spray it on, wait 2 minutes, then wipe it off and let dry. It really didn’t affect the color of any of my shoes. So far dry feet. Another quality product from Nikwax.

I don't like to complain, and I don't do this very often, but I was very lucky to notice that the top was loose and a lot of the product was in the cap. See photographs. I luckily could undo the very loose sprayer top and pour the material back into the canister, but just thought I should point this out for quality control.

I bought this to protect shoes prior to our cruise to Alaska. No doubt it will work well.

I have a 3 year old pair of 5.11 tactical boots I wear for work around water all summer long. They lost their ability to repel water and they STUNK lol. I soaked them in a mixture of peroxide, baking soda and dish soap (great for removing skunk smell from dogs), scrubbed then rinsed them thoroughly. I put them on a boot dryer for three days. Per the instructions I ran them under the faucet to get them wet prior to applying the waterproofing on the exterior. I let them sit for a few days to dry naturally and they’re waterproof again, look great and don’t stink anymore! Great product! Saved me $240 for a new pair of boots. Very cost effective alternative to new boots since my 5.11’s are still in great shape

I used the waterproof-spray for my hiking boots and I’m really happy with how it worked — after spraying it they kept water out even when I walked through damp grass. It felt easy to use and the boots didn’t lose breathability, which was great. One small thing though: the spray mist was a bit fine and I had to make sure I covered every part carefully or some spots still soaked in a little. Overall it’s a good product and I’d recommend it if you want to keep your shoes dry.
