To set the combination, you need to remove the back plate, by removing two philips screws. The instructions indicate that you should remove all pieces and insert for the combo. You really only need to change those that are different. The springs are a bit of a pain to get back together. I turn the knob a little, which locks in the inserts in place. This allows you to put the lock into the back plate with springs. It still took a try or two to get all springs level. The only other weird thing is that the handle is as small as it looks and turns. It was small enough that I thought maybe you pulled it. Edit: Warning to someone buying this to put into a door that already has a standard knob. THIS WILL NOT COVER THE HOLE. It also does not ship with a big enough rubber backer to cover the hole. This would be a fairly cheap addition.
