If the 14 year old users a computer and Ableton or Fl Studio to compose music, then I think this would be a wonderful thing to get them. **Q: Can Launchpad s be used like a drum machine and make beats that playback?** A: Yes but you'll need a script like launchpad95. It works on ableton but I'm not sure if the script is just ableton. **Q: Stupid question, but: does it have a speaker? or a way to use it without a computer? i wanna bring this to a friends house.** A: You need to use it with a computer. There's no speaker and there's no way to store your samples. **Q: i tried to finish my question but used too many words i guess. is this everything you need and can my kid get a book to learn how to use it?** A: I bought this for my son who will be 15 in December. I cannot answer if there is a book...I hope there is some kind of "learning" aid, as the reviews say it is difficult to learn.
