Max the Mighty

My son picked this book for his independent reading assignment and loved it. It's a follow up to Freak the Mighty, which was a class assigned book this year. He really liked both of these books. My son is in 7th grade and is just at the point where he will read a book that interests him without too much complaint. He enjoyed this book so much that he read it all before the deadline and had to pick an additional book (they always have to be reading for this class). Highly recommend it for a preteen/teenager who's looking for something that engages them.

I really love this book there is adventure and it’s a great book in general. There are some weird words but it’s a great story. You should probably read first book before reading this one. This book is great to and I think you should be at least eight years of age before reading this book. It’s so good I couldn’t put it down until I was done with it.

My students loved this!

I read Freak the Mighty as part of a lit unit for my students the last three years, and finally got around to reading the sequel. While Freak the Mighty sets the foundation for understanding just who Maxwell Kane is, Max the Mighty does a superb job of building on top of that groundwork. Philbrick's writing style shows how much Max has grown, and even evolved, since his adventures with Kevin ended. It is only natural that as a child grows and learns, their world view expands, which was wonderfully personified by taking Max and Worm from their hometown and thrusting them out into the great beyond. Philbrick also brought forth a more mature version of Max, an older and wiser version of the same hero we rooted for in his previous incantation. This was particularly interesting for me to see unfold because as Max was maturing, he was dealing with more grown up issues. The events of Freak the Mighty were harrowing in their own right for a young reader. The beauty of this book is that it allows those young fans, who also grew and matured in the time it took Philbrick to publish Max the Mighty, to face those more complex conflicts alongside the main character. A major issue with young adult lit, or teen lit, is when an author creates a series based around a central character, there is often very little development and growth of that character. You regularly get different versions of the same story, just set in slightly different places with a minor change in cast and conflict (i.e. Diary of a Wimpy Kid). Philbrick's Max the Mighty avoids this blunder and executes a uniquely written plot, even if the idea has been presented in various ways in other stories that came before. My only critique would have to be the story drags a bit after the kids are introduced to Dip. Aside from that, this book is quite a fun read.

After reading Freak the Mighty with the 7th grade class I work with, I found out there was a sequel and had to read it. I was not disappointed in the least. I highly recommend reading both books.

This was a great addition to Freak the Mighty. It is not necessary to have read his first book, but whatever order you read them in they are great books. After I read Freak the Mighty aloud to a classroom of 6th graders, they were sad to not hear about Max's adventures. I brought Max the Mighty to start to read and all the students were over joyed to hear about Max again. Both books together or separately are wonderful, touch on a lot of topics through out which lead to other discussions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a sweet young book where main character Max has things to overcome and do it in a fun way that students can relate to how he is feeling.

Yes, I used that word to describe it, and yes I gave it 5 stars This book has that type of feeling where you don't really feel like letting go of it, it's a part of you. Not the books that make you want to curse it after you read the first chapter. Just as good as the first book (I recommend you read the first one before max the mighty!) not only that, but rodman philbrick is an overall great author and I personally think you should read this book Regard to rodman philbrick

Max' Leben geht nach dem Tod von Kevin weiter. Er befreundet sich mit dem Mädchen Rachel, mit der er eine abenteuerlichen Roadtrip beginnt. Sie begegnen hier treuen Gefährten, aber auch listige Verrätern. An sich ist das Buch tatsächlich als ein Roadtrip konzipiert, der Max ein wenig auf die Reise schickt, was er ohne Kevin sein möchte und dass es viele Kinder auf der Welt gibt, die einen Beschützer wie ihn brauchen. Jedoch geht es nicht ganz so in die Tiefe wie der erste Teil und ist auch deutlich vorhersehbarer als dieser. Wer wissen möchte, wie es mit Max Kane weitergeht, für den ist das Buch (trotz englischer Sprache, aber nicht allzu schwierig) eine warme Empfehlung.
